I’ve been a part of the artistic community a long time. Not in a financially prosperous way, but involved nonetheless.

Always open to all kinds of music, literature, and other expressions of creative talent.

But sometimes the art world can be kinda snobby. Particularly to those who just dabble and enjoy some art with no interest in being an expert.

Once I was walking on the beautiful waterfront in Wilmington, NC, where various artists would gather. I stopped to listen to a man singing Acapella. Although I didn’t recognize the song, I thought his voice was pretty good. When he finished, he asked me what kind of music I liked.

Do you ever go blank sometimes when asked questions like these? I just smiled and said that I liked all kinds of music. He actually frowned and look disgusted, and walked off muttering, you don’t even know what music you like.

Well.

I thought of all the spectacular trees lining the streets in Wilmington. And all the parks that showcased the beauty of trees. I tried to learn the names of many of them, but I usually couldn’t remember.

And then I thought, hey, can’t I admire a single leaf without knowing all about the tree?

I admit I went through a book snobbery stage, but it didn’t last long. I know how hard it is to write a book– any book.

It’s all about maturity. It takes time.

And you do need thick skin in the art world as you develop your talents & passion.

Meanwhile, give yourself a break. It’s okay to admire a single leaf.
