All those commercials advertising gym memberships sadden me a little because I really miss my dumbbell days!

Ah…the clanging iron, the music, the grunts of dedicated people under one roof several times a week. The “regulars” from all walks of life bonded in the same struggle to improve their physical condition. Young & old shared tips and knowledge while spotting each other at the benches and machines.

I remember my first day at Champions gym in Greenville, N.C., sometime in my 20′ s.

I’d never been an athletic person. And I’d never had a weight problem. So I figured I was okay just walking & working.

One day, after hanging out with some athletic types, I plopped on the floor at home to try some pushups. I could not believe how weak I was! I could not push myself up even once.

I’d never thought about muscle strength. I was so shocked at my weakness that soon after I drove straight to the nearest gym and signed up.

I was amazed after a few months of commitment! I could do about 20 pushups, the regular way, and new little muscles made their debut.

I never totally gave up strength training in a gym until the last decade. Everytime I tried, I simply couldn’t do it. My body wouldn’t cooperate. I never felt refreshed in any way. So I gave up gym life.

But I didn’t give up finding other ways to keep moving. Walking is still a favorite exercise, and I discovered the exercise bands that are so easy to use.

I say keep moving any way you can. Even if you just park farther from a store’s entrance instead of closer. Even if you can still climb stairs instead of the elevator. And even if all you can do is ten minutes of yard work. Take lots of breaks!

My bodybuilding days may be over, but as the saying goes– it ain’t over ‘ til it’s over.

And I’ve been getting by the last few years with a borrowed rake and clippers. Even planted giant sunflowers around my apartment.

The flowers stood tall and strong. Their intense color, their beauty, reminded me everyday that I’m still a champion.

A champion in nature’s gym.

Nature never quits either.
